For those of you that have been on terra firma for more than 50 years you remember the song “That Smell” by Lynard Skynard. While the lyrics were speaking of the challenges of the day, if you walked into any body shop in that era, there was definitely a unique smell of chemicals and paint vapors that hit you. In September 2009, Richmond Collision Center became one of the first dealership body shops to switch from solvent based paints to water-based-products- a less toxic, more environmentally friendly system. “Our thinking was this is safer to use for our repair facility and better for our people. It’s also the future of systems to be used by most manufacturers, so why not get ahead of it?” said Willy Haskins, Director of the Richmond Collision Center.
“Change is always costly at first, modifying our paint system was expensive , painters had to change their application techniques, longer cure times required more efficient use of paint booths and above all else, body prep had to be more precise. All of this led to a better paint finish for our customer’s vehicles” says Haskins. “I like simple math, this paint system brings out our best yielding more satisfied customers. The more satisfied our customers are the more friends they tell, that equals more customers, which helps us grow our business”
